This fortified wine has been named in memory of my grandfather, Captain James Matheson Nimmo, a coalminer from Ngapara, North Otago. Produced in a “vintage port” style from ripe Pinotage grapes. Blackcurrants and blackberries lead to a smooth warm finish.

Pinotage (and a small amount of Merlot) were fermented in open top fermenters. Whey alcohol was added towards the end of ferment to stop the ferment (by increasing alcohol level to levels where the yeasts cannot survive) thereby retaining natural residual sweetness. The fortified wine was then matured in old oak barrels for 14 months.
Pinotage grapes were harvested at 28 brix in excellent condition from Ian Smith’s vineyard in Te Karaka.
